Southern Nevada Sports Centre possibly to join long list of other Vegas all-ages venues in non-denominational afterlife

Earlier this year, the Southern Nevada Sports Centre picked up the remaining shows booked at the now-defunct Ultra Violet Studios, making it the town’s latest much-needed all-ages venue. And after just a few short months of providing a fun and safe haven for young music lovers – keeping them out of sight and mind from the adult playground of The Strip –  the venue is on the verge of joining The Box Office, Hypnotic Lounge, Yayo Taco, The Castle, Tremorz, Skate City, Area 702, The Farm, The University Theatre, The Rock N Java, Jillian’s, The Alley, The Huntridge, two Junkyards and three different Sanctuaries and more in the graveyard of Vegas’ all-ages venues.

Local promoter Steven “The Jewish King” Goldberg, known for having the best first name in the biz, posted the following on Facebook today:

Hello everyone, (long post about music scene/venue situation)

What I am about to tell you is not good news and sure as hell pisses me off and saddens me to say.

Earlier today I was informed that the fire inspector/building inspector made a surprise visit to Southern Nevada Sports Centre and won’t let them do anything until certain issues are fixed. They are working hard on it right now but they don’t have any ETA yet as to when they will be up and running again.

I have nothing but love and respect for the owners of southern Nevada Sports Centre, the whole group there have become good friends of mine and it sucks this happened. They are not hiding or running away either. They are going to do everything they can to do what they have to do get it back running again but time frame is a mystery.

As far as all my shows before every bands ask, I am working right now to relocate all them. Some might be canceled but until you hear from me personally everything is going as planned. Most will be moved to eagle aerie hall such as Thick As Blood/Being As An Ocean once the agents approve the move. Battle of bands as well. Once I have everything figured out I will message/ contact the bands.

This only is about my shows. I have no say or knowledge to what’s happening with anyone else show that is booked there still.

Sadly as well I am likely calling it quits after I finish booking 2 last shows for September 2014. After 8 plus years of running around venue to venue I cannot do it anymore. Unless something happens within next few months I will be done booking. It seems as if the city of Las Vegas will never keep a small non corporate venue without someone trying to end it.

Among the shows now potentially orphaned is the July 3 Touche Amore/Tigers Jaw/Dads show, which if canceled will make me shed not one but two manly tears, and the May 18 show from A Lot Like Birds vocalist Kurt Travis. The upcoming Being As an Ocean show, scheduled for this Wednesday (May 7) has already been relocated to the Eagle Hall. We’ll of course bring you more info as we get it and if anyone can help with the relocation of any of the shows I recommended getting in touch with Goldberg via Facebook ASAP.

As to the fate of the Southern Nevada Sports Centre, we sincerely hope that they’re able to get everything back on track, as this endless string of shuttered all-ages venues is baffling in a city that professes to want to keep kids active and away from The Strip. We really need a constant venue in the local all-ages scene, and I’m not sure how to make that happen. Although I’m sure writing your County Commissioner to ask why no serious effort is put into giving kids a place to congregate and enjoy music won’t hurt.
