Brendan Scholz of Mercy Music opened the events for this afternoon, a companion piece to the Punk Rock BBQ, with a song called “Fine,” complete with an impeccable solo that featured all the power of an electric guitar coming from an acoustic. With sing-alongs and positive energy, he really set a good mood for what was to come.

Brock Frabbiele was the follow-up. His beard could challenge the greatness of Odin, and his musical talent was just as remarkable. I was definitely impressed. I’ve been to plenty of shows, but his set was of notable recognition. I recall him talking about wanting a fresh cup of coffee, the staple of all musicians, but I don’t believe he ever got it. Poor guy, he damn sure earned it.

Matt Salkeld played next, and I was immediately mesmerized. The vibe he staged was perfect musical accompaniment to an afternoon barbecue, very relaxing. Matt was touring with Sic Waiting who had played the BBQ the night before. His pal, Sic Waiting frontman Jared Stinson, was up next with his Dead Frets solo project.

I remember Jared saying he hadn’t really done an acoustic set in a long time, but from someone who has never heard him or his band I was eager to find out what was in store. The songs he played were great, even though he dropped his pick a few times. Jesse Pino and him joked  about the difference in pick thickness, because Jared is familiar with 73’s and Jesse gave him a 72 to use. I had the pleasure of meeting Jared when I came in and I knew he was one of the performers, but I didn’t think much of it, until I heard him play. It made me want to check out what the full band sounds like, because the show was magnificent.

Jesse Pino was our final act of the night. He played some beautiful songs and from that show, I knew I definitely needed him in my playlist on Spotify! He plays very mellow music that really touches the heart. A couple of songs that really stayed with me were “Lady in Black” and “Idiot,” which he played for Brock and his lovely wife Kate because he didn’t get to play it for their wedding. All in all, great night, good music. Go listen to all of these guys!
