Music: Alan Six ‘Illuminachos’ (2016)

Today we’re bringing you a full stream of Illuminachos, the debut full length from Vegas pop punk band Alan Six, and the only release this year whose title will make you both hungry and a little paranoid. Mmmm… nachos… The album will be available at The Dive this Friday, June 24, as well as digitally through Bandcamp around the same time.

But who is Alan Six?

“Alan Six essentially started when I found a drum set on Craigslist for cheap,” says drummer Dave Post. “I’ve been playing guitar and bass for years, I wanted to learn a new instrument, but I couldn’t practice without someone else to play along with. I had recently met Lance [Louden] and found out he played guitar, but had never been in a band. I figured no one with band experience would want to play along with a drummer that was just learning. Lance turned out to be perfect, albeit annoying, for me to work with. After writing a few songs, we asked my wife, Adrienne [Post], to come sing for us. We went through 2 bass players before Adrienne elected to play bass herself. She and I both learned an instrument through this band. And like Lance, she’s never been in a band before.”

The band’s sound has been formed from a variety of musical influences, and a healthy appetite for food and booze. “Our influences vary from person to person, of course,” Post explains. “Lance, who does our main songwriting, loves early 90s Lookout Records stuff. Adrienne loves bands with strong female vocals, like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Detroit Cobras, and Bikini Kill. I don’t know if I can say that Adrienne or I have influences in our respective instruments, being that we haven’t been on them very long. I feel like The Sonics have been on heavy rotation for me in the time since I started playing. I have to throw in that my favorite punk rock bands always pepper my style: Fleshies, Hickey and the Bar Feeders. It’s hard to know what comes through. Inexperience is a big part of our style, I think.  We don’t know exactly what we’re doing, other than having fun and sharing mutual loves of beer, whiskey and Mexican food.”

Illuminachos, which we’re streaming today, came together thanks to the help of multiple recording facilities in Vegas. “We recorded in 3 different places,” says Post. “We started with drums, guitar, and lead vocals at 11th Street Records. We did the bass and backup vocals at Digital Insight.  Then we did some additional guitars in the garage. Mike Lavin engineered everything, mixed and mastered it. This thing wouldn’t be possible without him.”

Fans of the band won’t have to wait long to catch them live. They’ll be playing The Dive this Friday, June 24, for an album release show that also features Undercover Monsters, The Mapes, and Melanie and the Midnite Marauders. And if you get to the show early, don’t forget to chat the band up about The League, as Post bemoans: “‘Alan Six’ is an auto-correct joke I heard on a cable TV show. The gag made me laugh and had a ring to it. I had the name in mind before Adrienne joined up. She isn’t happy that the name stuck. I don’t think any of us really are.”
