Music: Characters “Incandescent”

Today we’re bringing you “Incandescent,” a brand new single from Vegas band Characters off their upcoming EP Reasons Not To Exist.

“Incandescent” is the first new song from Characters since summer of 2014, a time when it looked like the band was done in the wake of bassist Cameron Beck and drummer Jeremy Dahl leaving for college. “[Being away at school] definitely slows things down considerably,” explains Beck, “Though, our writing process is lengthy to begin with. Usually, one of us will have an idea, record it and then send it to everyone over email or text. We’ll usually have some time to sit with the idea and create our parts on our own.”

The band members cut their teeth in pop punk/Blink-influenced band Next Generation Rising before morphing into Characters, and the songs on Reasons Not To Exist see a further evolution of their style. According to Cameron: “[emo] bands like The World is a Beautiful Place…, Girlfriends and Algernon Cadwallader influenced a lot of the writing of this EP. We were also influenced by some screamo bands; Father Figure, I Hate Myself, etc. I think that the most significant change since our last release has been adding Austin Longworth on guitar and vocals. We’ve known Austin since our freshman year of high school. When Jeremy and I came back in the winter last year, Austin jammed with us and after that, they joined. They’ve been able to open up so many doors for us as far as songwriting goes and we’re really excited about what has come from that.”

Fans will have to wait a little bit to see the new songs live. “We’ll be releasing Reasons Not To Exist on cassette with our good friends from Lonesome Waltz Records out of Philadelphia” says Beck. “We’re setting up some shows in Reno and Northern California for November. We’ll be releasing a four way split 7 inch with our friends in Reno and two friends from Pennsylvania. We’ll hopefully play a release show this winter in Las Vegas. And Austin started writing new material about a week ago.”

Reasons Not to Exist was produced by Jonas Vece and will be available soon via Characters’ Bandcamp and later via Lonesome Waltz Records.
