Music: All Grown Ups Are Pirates “Tell Your Lies”

Today we’re bringing you a stream of “Tell Your Lies,” the debut song from All Grown Ups Are Pirates. This is the new solo project from local artist Rye Martin, who readers of this site may know as the former drummer for indie group Avalon Landing. But while many have come to know Martin as a drummer, he’s actually a Jack of all trades on this track, playing all instruments and providing vocals.

“If anyone knows me they know me for my drumming,” explains Martin. “I’ve been playing since I was a child. My father was a drum instructor so I’ve been around it my entire life. I guess that’s what made me want to learn more instruments. I only have an acoustic guitar, and I only play for fun. I have barely ever played electric guitar, and I never played bass before this song.”

And while Martin’s recent indie rock past may lead one to assume this project carries a similar vibe, All Grown Ups Are Pirates finds Martin comfortably sliding into the pop punk/emo scene, exploring a genre he’s long been a fan of. “I actually grew up on the east coast playing in fast pop punk and ska bands mostly – those are my roots!” exclaims Martin.

“Some of my influences for this project were Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters) and Aaron Gillespie (vocalist/drummer for Underoath and current Paramore drummer) for being incredible drummers and singers but all around great musicians! But I wasn’t really trying to be influenced by any bands. The song just kind of came out. It really reminds me of old Anberlin meets The Fully Down with a hint of Acceptance. All great bands that I love. So I’m cool with that.”

Pop culture junkies may have already singled out the root of Martin’s project’s name, but for those who went movieless in the early 90s, Martin offers this explanation: “The movie Hook has always been one of my favorites and who doesn’t love Rufio [the lost boy who says the quote in the film]? I just always loved the saying “All grown ups are pirates!” It’s almost been the name of a few releases from other bands but I felt like it was a cooler name to use not just the title of a record but for the entire project itself!“

Being that Martin plays everything on the album, the question becomes “how can he pull these songs off live?” Right now, plans for a live band are in the works, but still a ways off, as Martin explains: “I’m currently writing for an album with engineer/producer Taylor Voeltz (Hundredth, Mureau, Emmure, Betrayl). What to expect next, well, definitely a music video for this song soon and after that, who knows, maybe some shows! As of now I’m torn to what instrument I would want to play during a show.”

“Big thanks to my Las Vegas recording crew Dylan Forster and Mike Lazer Lavin at Digital Insight Recording! I want to also thank Punks In Vegas for being amazing and supporting our local music scene so much and giving me the chance to talk about my music! All I can say for now is stay tuned!“
