Punk Rock Bowling 2014 Wrap up

With Punk Rock Bowling 2014 now in the rear-view mirror, we wanted to check in with a few of the attendees and get a feel for who was the most memorable act this year, as well as find out the wishlist for next year. Who knows, maybe the Sterns will end up reading this and take our suggestions to heart! None More Black shows up on this list more than once – just sayin’.

  1. Who was your #1 favorite band at PRB this year and why?
  2. What band do you want to see play PRB next year and why?

Against Me! by Steven Matview

Emily Matview (Punks in Vegas)

1. It’s hard to pick when bands like Descendents and Masked Intruder put on such amazing sets but in the end I have to go with Against Me! There’s just so much passion and energy in their performance and I had a blast singing along.

2. I’m torn between two bands that tend to reunite from time to time – pop punk band Weston and melodic hardcore band Kid Dynamite. If you get Weston you can also spin off a Beach Slang club show, and with Kid Dynamite you can spin off a bunch of club shows with their related bands like Lifetime, Paint it Black and None More Black.

The Gashers by Tyler Newton

Allan Carter (SquidHat Records)

1. Of course I am partial to the Gashers, who made us all proud with a rowdy and fast-paced set. Would love to see the reaction if they had played later in the evening. The surprise for me was Anti Nowhere League. Not that they were good, but that I enjoyed their set so much. They put on an incredible show and were genuinely fun to watch.

2. Motorhead. It’ just time.

The Briefs by Tyler Newton

Lance Well (Punks in Vegas, ex-Faded Grey)

1. As cool as it was to see some classic bands like Cro-Mags, Judge, and Naked Raygun, I prefer the vitality of the present, and I am always stoked to see a new band with new songs that I love. That being said, Night Birds was the best band I saw at the 2014 PRB festival. These modern morons from New Jersey really ripped it up live at The Fremont Country Club.

2. Paint It Black is another new(er) band that I really enjoy, and since they have yet to play in Las Vegas, maybe we can get them on the PRB roster in 2015. It would be so rad to see these dudes at one of the smaller club shows with other bands like The Bomb, Dillinger 4, and Strike Anywhere. Now that would be an impeccable lineup!

Descendents by Steven Matview

Andrew (Guts)

1. It was my first Punk Rock Bowling experience and I was able to make it out to days 2 and 3. I’m not 21 sadly, so I wasn’t able to make the bar shows. Of the two days I went, Masked Intruder being a close second, Descendents simply destroyed every other set I watched. The anticipation of waiting all day to see them take the stage and hearing “Everything Sux” followed by “Hope.” Their set was simply prime, along with the simplicity of have the white bright lights beaming behind them.

2. I would love to see Bad Religion take the PRB stage next year. I’m sure many people could agree that they’re viable candidates to headline one of the nights and it’d be great to see them in that awesome festival atmosphere.

Cock Sparrer by Tyler Newton

Jeff Berman (Divided Heaven)

1. Cock Sparrer. The festival show was so special and exhilarating I was moved to tears. The club show gave an insight into an incredibly tenured and appreciative group of men. They love us, they love each other and in return we regard them in high esteem, a collectively loved all time favorite.

2. Oxymoron, the greatest German punk band of all time.

01 Descendent (26)-2

Shahab Zargari (GC Records)

1. Favorite band was Descendents.

2. Illicitor! Main Stage!

Against Me! by Steven Matview

Sal Giordano (TheCore.)

1. Against Me. Best set

2. None More Black and Hot Water Music

H2O by Ian Caramanzana

Ian Caramanzana (Punks in Vegas)

1. H20. I saw the band a couple of times prior to PRB weekend, but the energy displayed during this particular set by both the band and fans was unparalleled. It was nonstop stage dives and singalongs from the very first chord to the last of the group vocals. Read my review here.

2. I’d love to see Jawbreaker there next year. With so many bands hitting the reunion circuit, I can only hope one of my favorite bands will follow suit. Drummer Adam Pfahler constantly posts Facebook statuses regarding the band’s history, so I can assume he’s missed playing in the band. Maybe he can convince Blake and Chris to bite the bullet.
