Review: Bobby Meader Music ‘Sometimes I Wish You’d Tell a Lie’ (2015)

Self-released (2015)
Sounds Like: Bright Eyes, Divided Heaven

Score: 8/10

To be honest, I wasn’t a big fan of Bobby Meader Music’s last album, Breakfast After Noon. So going into his second EP of the year, Sometimes I Wish You’d Tell a Lie, I expected much of the same, and braced myself accordingly.

So the first song, “Rotating Signs,” caught me off guard in the best possible way. The instrumentals are pulled to the forefront on this album, and though it sounds like an oxymoron – I’d say that this new stuff is polished grunge.

Bobby’s lyrics have a tendency to be hit or miss for me. An example of the hit: “When you sleep, you’re the world’s cutest fucking thing.” On the other hand, the second song, “Untitled 78,” misses the mark for me, just reminding me of slightly less depressing Bright Eyes songs with familiar lyrics like “You say that you care, but don’t fuck with me.”

Bobby Meader Music is much more coherent and cohesive as a band on this EP, which definitely contributed to me enjoying it more than Breakfast After Noon. Based on this, I’d actually like to see Breakfast After Noon remastered, with instruments playing a bigger part in the music.
