On Saturday, Nov. 9, I checked out Southern California’s Assuming We Survive at Artifice downtown. I’m always surprised to find awesome venues that I’ve never heard of, but Danielle O’Hara (Nevermore Productions) did mention that punk shows are infrequent there, so that’s probably why it hasn’t been on my radar. The bar has a pretty good sized stage and floor area, good sound, and a good cocktail bar. I’m surprised more bands don’t play here.

Assuming We Survive had a large, enthusiastic crowd mixed with locals and a lot of fans visiting from Southern California. I immediately recognized “Catch 22” from Spotify and the crowd response confirmed that it was one of their most popular anthems. I was extremely impressed by the band’s energy, especially that of singer Adrian Estrella who was all over the stage and in the crowd.

Also visiting from California were Behind the Fallen who describe themselves as hard rock, and I enjoyed their metal-inspired guitar parts. Supporting the show were 3 local acts I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing before; Good Greens – a mellow ska/reggae duo of guitar and saxophone, Revolve; a hard rock metal band, and Twenty8; a genre-spanning progressive act.
