Music: Listen to five songs from Rusty Maples’ ‘Detach’ in advance of its October 28 release

Today we’re bringing you five songs from Detach, the first full length from Vegas indie rock band Rusty Maples. The album will be available this Friday, Oct. 28, at the album release show at The Bunkhouse Saloon.

Rusty Maples has been active in the Vegas music scene for over 5 years, but their pedigree dates back much further, with bands like The Skooners and Hungry Cloud under members’ belts. They’ve released three EPs during their time together, but according to frontman Blair Dewane, writing a full-length allowed them to really perfect their sound:  “We knew exactly what we wanted to do with this album. With the EPs we never had a plan, we just wanted to record whatever songs we had, which always left us regretting that we did something different. There are no regrets on this album.”

When it came time to record, the band headed south to work with a producer whose eclectic credits include Gerard Way, Cannibal Corpse and Smith Westerns. As Dewane explains: “We recorded in El Paso at Sonic Ranch with Jerry Ordonez. We demoed the entire album at Naked City Audio with John Kiehlbauch over the course of 8-10 months. We got really serious about this whole ‘concept’ thing and wanted to make a cohesive album that showcased our sound.”

Fans of the band eager to hear more songs from the album won’t have to wait long. Rusty Maples will be headlining a release show this Friday Oct. 28 at The Bunkhouse, a show that features a lineup of Nevada’s best including The Killers’ Mark Stoermer. The local connection comes at the perfect time, since the last Friday in October is a special day for us Las Vegans, as Dewane describes: “Fucking Nevada Day! The album is about Las Vegas and the surrounding deserts, so the fact that we were able to get our favorite band from Reno (Failure Machine) our favorite new Vegas band (We Are Pancakes) and a fucking Killer on the bill really has some sort of home state pride. It had to be Nevada Day. The Bunkhouse is our home. No matter what band I’ve been in, I’ve always had a relationship with the place. It has a sort of Haunted energy.”
