Review: Misser ‘Distancing’ (2013)

Tim Landers (of Transit) and Brad Wiseman (of This Time Next Year) have taken it to the next level with Misser’s new EP, Distancing. Everything I liked about their debut Every Day I Tell Myself I’m Going To Be A Better Person is intensified here. The lyrics are still poignant and remarkably bitter at times. The vocals blend perfectly. And musically, it’s livelier than ever.

“Goddamn Salad Days” kicks the door in with one of those sticks-with-you choruses that is perfect to blare from your car window and “Infrared” is crazy catchy. While “Burn Out” and “Alone, Die” form the bulk of the EP, the best songs bookend Distancing. Case in point, the finale “Slow It Down, Write It Out” is introduced by an awesome guitar lick that lasts the whole way through. The mellow, ambling song closes out the EP perfectly with a bridge that is powerful and almost heavy, without losing its rhythm or melody. “I won’t get sleep until sleep gets me, I won’t cheat death until death cheats me,” was stuck in my head all weekend, even though I’m not entirely sure as to what any of that means.

If you enjoyed Misser’s debut, you’ll love this EP. Personally, I might like this collaboration more than the singers’ two other bands. The lyrics and the music all come together to produce a polished album by a band sure to make noise this year.
