Extreme Thing Not Happening in 2015 *updated*

It was announced today via the official Extreme Thing website and Facebook page that the long-running sports and music festival will not be happening in 2015, marking its first year of absence since launching in 2001.

According to their page:

It is with a heavy heart that we must announce that there will not be an Extreme Thing in 2015.

Thank you all for understanding and for your support to everyone involved in past Extreme Thing events.

This of course follows the announcement that Warped Tour, which has had a consistent presence in Vegas over the last few years, would also be skipping our town in 2015.

Like every festival ever, ET often caught a lot of online flak for its lineups over the years, perceived by some to be “not extreme enough” or whatever, dating back to the first year, which was headlined by decidedly unextreme pop punkers Home Grown. But not being beholden to one genre has allowed the festival to book the likes of Bad Religion, Less Than Jake, GlassJaw, The Vandals, Anti-Flag, Pennywise, The Aquabats, The Wonder Years, Polar Bear Club, Streetlight Manifesto and more over the years, as well as being the home of the 2003 Ska Summit.

Extreme Thing is also pretty much the only festival we have (had?) that doesn’t take place in the triple degree heat, and since it’s been held at a family-friendly park and remained all-ages throughout its run, it has acted as many music fans’ first show, which is pretty cool. We’re sad to hear this announcement, and hope to see Extreme Thing return in some form over the coming years.

In the meantime, those looking to relive Extreme Thing’s past can see 2014 alumnus No Bragging Rights at the Eagle Hall this Thursday,  December 18. More details for that show can be found on Facebook.

Update: We reached out to Extreme Thing and received this comment from Dan Kulin from the Clark County Office of Public Communications regarding why the event is not happening in 2015:

We are down some staff at this time, so we were concerned that we would not be able to adequately plan, prepare and implement such a large event.
