Interview: Bobby Franks talks Remainder (former members of Faded Grey, Of Faith And Fire and more) demo, 2/12 show with Give

Remainder is a new band with an impressive lineage behind it, boasting former members of bands including Tomorrows Gone, Faded Grey, Lester Freamon and Of Faith and Fire. They’re a Vegas supergroup that came together after a nostalgia filled show at Backstage Bar late last year.

“Lance [Wells, Faded Grey] came up to me at the 2014 LVHC/Punk reunion show at Triple B’s saying he had some songs written for a new project that he wanted me to be a part of” says Remainder’s Bobby Franks (Of Faith and Fire) of the band’s origins. “He sent me some tracks of just guitar and bass he was working on. A month or two later he jammed with Shay [Mehrdad, Faded Grey] and Mike [Randazzo, Of Faith and Fire] and sent me that session. I wrote some lyrics and adapted some of his own lyrics to the music, and we’ve been jamming whenever we can find time over the past year or so.”

The band released their debut, a three song demo, earlier this week on Bandcamp and it’s sure to be right up the alley of those of us who grew up reading Airbag, or anyone yearning for the glory days of Dag Nasty, 7 Seconds and Rites of Spring. Remainder is also perfect for fans of the band members’ previous projects in both sound and lyrical content.

“Collectively, we’ve all been playing this style of music off and on for the past 20 or so years, and I think what we brought to the table reflects that” Franks explains, when talking about how these three songs came together. “As of right now the process writing songs is taking the backbone of what Lance provides musically and adding to it. Lyrically, the focus is about still being a bit maladjusted as an adult as I was 15-20 years ago, and coping with that. We recorded with a friend named Adam Punjabi, who recorded some things for bands Mike and I have done in the past. The actual process of recording was pretty laidback and fun. We had the songs nailed down, and we knew what we wanted to do going in.”

Fans looking to experience the band live don’t have much longer to wait. The band will be joining Washington, DC’s Give and locals Unfair Fight and Spring Time at the Womb Room this Friday, Feb. 12. The DIY spirit of the makeshift venue being the perfect fit for these Vegas scene veterans.

“Playing the Womb Room is going to be a lot of fun. Nothing beats DIY shows. Whether it’s in the desert, in someone’s house/backyard, record store or at a rented out VFW/Elks lodge – the feeling and atmosphere is still there. It totally beats playing a bar, as you know the people who are at the show are there for the music, and not so much for the social lubricant. Nothing is more of a let down than playing a packed bar knowing that 50-80% of the people in attendance are there to be seen and try to get laid over actually wanting to see your band play.”

“I’m really into the fact that the Womb Room is operated by people who have been involved off and on with the local punk/hardcore scene for as long or almost as long as some of us in Remainder have been involved. It’s pretty cool knowing that it’s the continuation of the same tribe, same ideals and same spirit of just wanting to provide a space for new music and ideas.”

Details for Remainder’s debut show can be found on Facebook and you can keep up with the band on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
